About

Mobsessed is the blog of Carl Martin, an evangelist of the mobile industry, and self confessed mobsessive. Its intention is to inform and educate the world of the power of mobile in not just the marketing and creative industries, but as a communication tool to revolutionise the way we interact and understand each other as human beings.

Why Mobsessed?

I originally began blogging over at Mobile Advertising Matters, however as the blogs popularity increased, the necessity for a more technical site became evident. This is where the concept for Mobsessed was born. However I cannot take the credit for the name which has been greeted with great affection. A Twitter based conversation with Mobile Godfather, Tomi Ahonen and Mobile Marketing Association big cheese Russell Buckley gave birth to the name Mobsessed. It was only through this that I realised it was the perfect name for my blog and future personal brand. Since its conception, Mr Buckley has also begun blogging under the guise of ‘Mobsessed’ also, however they are not competitors! We are both trying to educate and inform, and spread the message of mobsessives the world over.

Who is Carl Martin?

The Many Faces of Carl Martin

  • Mobile Strategist at NMA Top 100 Digital Agency Redweb
  • Previous experience in Account Handling and Flash Design
  • Self confessed Rugby Nut, having watched, coached and played for over 12 years

I have made a meteoric rise into the mobile space, especially considering I only graduated in the summer of 2008. My mobsession began as a young teen when I saw a mobile phone (a Nokia 2110 if you are wondering!) for the first time. From here, I dedicated hours to reading the latest mobile websites, and began my affinity with these devices with the Nokia 3210.

10 years and many handsets later, I was graduating from Bournemouth University with an Upper Second Class Honours Degree in Interactive Media, with a ten thousand word dissertation on the future of the mobile advertising industry in the UK. I started up Mobile Advertising Matters as my platform to communicate and express my views on the mobile and digital industries, which I hoped would land me an agency job!

I was fortunate enough to be offered a job with NMA Top 100 digital agency Redweb as an Account Executive, and was immediately thrown in at the deep end, working with prestigious clients such as the Identity and Passport Service, Criminal Records Bureau and Skandia.

However as the agency grew and my mobsession expanded, I began to establish a reputation within the Mobile blogging and networking space. It is through this that I was fortunate enough to meet Jonathan Macdonald; a man who has played a significant part in moulding my future, and the strategies of major brands and agencies around the world.

In the space of 10 months, I have moved from humble mobile blogger, to established Mobile Evangelist. I have been given the opportunity to help shape not just my own agency’s mobile strategy, but help influence the industry from a real position of responsibility.

In my spare time, I am a passionate rugby player (whenever I am not on the treatment table that is!) and am in the process of establishing a non profit organisation to raise money for the development of Rugby in Ghana, with the ultimate dream to see them participate in the Rugby Sevens tournament at the 2016 Olympics.

I want to harness everything I learn on a day to day basis in this new blog, and make some new friends in the industry along the way, so feel free to drop me an email at carl@mobsessed.co.uk if you fancy a chat. Would love to hear from you!
